Westminster Abbey Family Challenge
In 1943, the part of the Abbey known as the Lady Chapel was chosen to be the location of a new RAF Chapel, which would commemorate the members of the RAF who died during the Battle of Britain. The location was chosen because it was damaged by bombs during the same year as the Battle, 1940. The original stained-glass window was blown out and a new brightly coloured Battle of Britain window was commissioned to replace it.
The annual Battle of Britain service is held in Westminster Abbey on the Sunday of, or following Battle of Britain Day (15 September), and has taken place here every year since 1944.
