Westland Wessex and The Royal Family
The RAF acquired two Wessex helicopters to provide service with the Queen’s Flight. The helicopters were sound proofed and kitted out with a plush interior finish along with the addition of an external folding step below the cabin door.
One of these flew in support of the investiture of the Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle, Wales in 1969. Both Prince Charles and the late Prince Philip were trained Wessex pilots.
