When the Germans come through the gate, fire
Wing Officer Arthur Taylor
The German invasion of France and the Low Countries began on 10 May 1940. The attack surprised the Allied armies who quickly fell back in the face of the German attack. British forces retreated to the channel coast where a hastily arranged evacuation took place. Arthur Taylor was a ground wireless operator with 13 Squadron, an army co-operation squadron operating Lysanders in the artillery spotting role. Here he recalls his journey during the retreat to Dunkirk.
