It wasn’t only people who sheltered in the tube stations

On 24 August 1939, Tate closed its doors to the public for the duration of the war. Most works of art were moved to safe storage in the countryside while some were hidden in disused underground tunnels at Piccadilly Station.

One painting by Stanley Spencer was just too big to move, so a brick wall was built in front of it to protect it during air raids.
