SCAF and Workshops
These functional RAF Hendon air station buildings were constructed in 1931. Building 52 was the Supply Control and Accounting Flight (SCAF) for the airfield, handling regular deliveries by lorry. These buildings served the resident London Auxiliary squadrons flying from here in the ‘30s. During 1939, with a major European conflict imminent, the exteriors had patches of black, light green, tan and sand brown applied to walls and roofs. This was to camouflage buildings from enemy aircraft flying overhead which would be expected to try to destroy the buildings on RAF airfields. You can still faintly see large sections of the camouflage paint on the outside walls of these buildings. This scheme would have been applied to all the buildings here at that time. Despite these precautions, and the fact that the Luftwaffe knew the airfield was here, RAF Hendon was not directly targeted during the war and only one significant incident occurred during the Battle itself.
