Hawker Hurricane Mk 1
The Hurricane entered service in 1937 as the RAF’s first eight-gun monoplane, ending the era of the two-gun biplane fighter. Hurricanes were the most numerous RAF fighters in the Battle and destroyed more enemy aircraft than all other British defences combined - and more enemy aircraft than any other allied fighter in the Second World War. Until Spitfires became available in quantity, the Hurricane was the aircraft most used in British fighter operations. Hurricanes were fast and easy to fly. The clustering of their Browning machine gun armament midway on the wings meant aiming of fire was simpler for most pilots. This Hurricane served with No. 607 Squadron during the Battle of France and flew convoy patrols over the Clyde approaches during the later stages of the Battle of Britain.
