McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR2
Type of aircraft used in air defence
Three Phantom aircraft of No. 29 Squadron were despatched in May 1982 to provide air defence for the vitally important logistics hub of Ascension Island.
Following the Argentinian surrender, Harrier GR.3s provided temporary air defence cover of the Falklands Islands while the airfield at Stanley was extended in preparation for the arrival of Phantoms. The first Phantoms arrived in October 1982; the RAF have maintained an air defence presence on the Falklands to the present day.
