Type of reconnaissance aircraft

The RAF deployed Nimrod aircraft to Ascension Island during the Falklands Conflict. Nimrods flew long distance patrols searching for Argentinean warships and submarines that might have threatened the British fleet that was supporting the recapture of the islands.

Nimrods also flew search and rescue operations and provided rendezvous assistance to other aircraft operating over the Atlantic.

During the Falklands Conflict, the Nimrod on display here was stationed at Freetown in Sierra Leone and flew search and rescue sorties in support of aircraft ferrying to Ascension Island.
