Colindale Underground Station
The Hendon area experienced bombing raids from August 1940 and homes in the area sustained damage. However, the airfield was only lightly hit in comparison with other fighter airfields. On 25 September, the area experienced one of its more tragic events. At 10.10pm Colindale Underground Station received a direct hit from a German bomb. Thirteen people were killed, four of whom were airmen from RAF Hendon: three from the Station HQ and one from the Radio Fitting Unit. London Transport staff and civilian passengers were also killed. The following day No. 504 Squadron were sent to defend Bristol where the Bristol aircraft factory at Filton had been hit.
