Pilot Officer W.M.L. Fiske III
Pilot Officer W.M.L. Fiske III was the first American in British service to be killed in the Battle of Britain. He flew from RAF Tangmere with 601 Squadron; died of burns and shock on 17th August 1940 and was buried in Boxgrove Priory churchyard with full military honours. In 2008 a stained-glass window by Mel Howse featuring the American flag and a Hurricane was dedicated to his memory.
