Low-level attack on bridges over the River Meuse
Aircraftman 1st Class Leonard Clarke
In May 1940 the German army invaded France and the Low Countries with a surprise attack through the Ardennes. They quickly crossed the River Meuse at Sedan. To slow the German advance, all RAF bomber aircraft in the area were ordered to attack troop concentrations and pontoon bridges on the River Meuse. Of the 71 aircraft despatched 39 were shot down. Leonard Clarke, a Fairey Battle air gunner in No.12 Squadron, recalls his role in this disastrous operation.
