Story of the Monument
Opened in 2005, the 65th anniversary of the Battle, by The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, the bronze scenes by sculptor Paul Day portray people involved in all aspects of the battle, from observers from the Observer Corps, factory workers, civilians, plotters, gun crews, pilots and more. On other sides, panels bear the names of every airman who flew during the Battle. The bronze panels were cast by the Morris Singer Foundry, who had also cast the lions of Trafalgar Square. The memorial makes use of a granite clad smoke flue which channelled smoke from the steam trains of the Victorian District and Circle Lines.
